Tecnología y política.

Los políticos luchan incansablemente por acceder a los medios para tener visibilidad, puesto que éstos son la nueva plaza pública o ágora moderna.
El dominio y el uso de las tecnologías del momento son fundamentales para el triunfo electoral. La historia nos lo ha enseñado. Franklin Delano Roosevelt usó la radio para recuperar la confianza de los norteamericanos en sus instituciones, perdida en la Gran Depresión económica de 1929; su logro radicó en que la gente lo acogiera como presidente amigo y hasta miembro de la familia en la propia sala del hogar; encontró en el medio, a través de sus charlas junto al fuego, la herramienta ideal para exponer sus ideas directamente a sus compatriotas:
La intimidad de la radio otorgó a FDR un lugar virtual a la mesa de la cena familiar que le permitió participar directamente en la discusión de cada hogar sobre la guerra y hacer que comprendieran, casa por casa, por qué era necesario un compromiso tan grande (Morris, 2003, p. 18).
Por su parte, Kennedy utilizó la televisión para ganar unas elecciones que parecían difíciles, y Richard Nixon para perder unas elecciones que se percibían fáciles. Kennedy entendió que este medio era ideal para hacer alarde de su glamour, gracia, perspicacia e inteligencia: «Kennedy, como han comentado el historiador David Aberbach y otros, fue el primer político que ‘voluntariamente se transformó en un producto mediático’» (Morris, 2003, p. 362). Con su victoria sobre Nixon demostró que una imagen vale más que mil palabras.
El medio actual es Internet. Y las campañas electorales se ganaran a través de las redes sociales. Las redes sociales, con las que ya se había experimentado de forma rudimentaria en las anteriores elecciones, han sido importantes protagonistas en las que acaban de tener lugar, y especialmente en el triunfo de Obama. Esto lo saben Zapatero y Rajoy que ya se hicieron el Facebook. Ignorar esta actual forma de mostrarse ante los demás puede suponer un fatal riesgo para los políticos.
